Indians are definitely not the only crazy people to coat others with colour and throw water on them for fun. Here is a list of festivals around the world so similar to Holi, that sometimes we incorporate them too!
‘The Tomato Battle’ or ‘La Tomatina’ – Spain
This one is quite popular due to its presence in the movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starring Hrithik Roshan, Katrika Kaif, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar and Kalki Koechlin in the song Paint it Red.
This festival truly paints the town of Valencian in Bunol, Spain – red! Celebrated in the last week of August, people throw tomatoes at each other just for fun and laughs. Thousands of people travel here just to be a part of this big crazy festival.
The Orange Battle – Italy
People just love food fights, don’t they?
Well, here they just paint the town orange by throwing the fruit orange at people. It is the largest food fight in Italy, taking place in the beautiful town of Ivrea.
The history of this festival is kind of amazing and empowering – It is marked as a celebration when a young bride managed to cut off the head of an infamous, cruel count who forced himself on newly-wed females. His army was later destroyed by the village. The battle of Oranges is a re-enact of this same battle. A girl from the town plays the brave bride while others are soldiers, the generals etc – the town is divided into 9 teams.
The New Year in Thailand is celebrated every year from 13th – 15th April. The festival calls for throwing water on familiar people. Just like Holi has pichkari’s, Songkran has water guns. The best or the worst thing about the festival, depending on whether you are the victim or the instigator, is the buckets of ice cold water that are doused on unsuspecting people
